Night Huntress

Night Huntress is one of three series that I marathoned at the same time in 2016, and is one that I love to pieces. I hadn’t been into reading actual published work in a long time, and about halfway through November I decided to change that. I picked up this series, Mercy Thompson and Kate Daniels and flew through them all; well except for a book or two of the other ones which I will review once I am caught up. In any case, I’m here to rave.

Night Huntress

Author: Jeaniene Frost

GR (Book 1, Halfway to the Grave):
Half-vampire Catherine Crawfield is going after the undead with a vengeance, hoping that one of these deadbeats is her father – the one responsible for ruining her mother’s life. Then she’s captured by Bones, a vampire bounty hunter, and is forced into an unholy partnership.

In exchange for finding her father, Cat agrees to train with the sexy night stalker until her battle reflexes are as sharp as his fangs. She’s amazed she doesn’t end up as his dinner – are there actually good vampires? Pretty soon Bones will have her convinced that being half-dead doesn’t have to be all bad. But before she can enjoy her newfound status as kick-ass demon hunter, Cat and Bones are pursued by a group of killers. Now Cat will have to choose a side . . . and Bones is turning out to be as tempting as any man with a heartbeat.

Review (Spoiler Free)

Despite my apprehension regarding love at first sight romances, or rather fast-paced romances in this case, I’m making an exception here. I picked up this series because it looked kind of interesting with vampires and smut. Without love triangles. Because you have no idea how much I loathe love triangles.

Overall, Cat is likable and a good character – even though she can kind of do everything including beat vampires with way more experience than her (sans Bones). Bones is amusing and fun, though a little bit psychotic in an endearing way. The chemistry between them is unbelievable, and there is a lot of sex in this series. Hot sex. A lot.

The clock struck eleven and cat the vampire huntress was on the loose, except my battle armor was a push-up bra, curled hair, and a short dress. Yeah, it was a dirty job, but I was going to do it. Come one, come all, bloodsuckers! Bar’s open!

– Halfway to the Grave

Main Characters (Spoilers)
Catherine Crawfield, aka Cat, is the main character of the series. In the start of the series she is half-human and half-vampire; she has most of the perks of vampirism except some of the really cool ones, and is super anti-vampire. In fact, her mother, who raised her with the impression that she was a product of rape, has set her on a life mission of killing as many vampires as she can. So Cat stalks the bars in her hometown of Ohio, seeking out vampires and staking them.

Then Cat meets Bones, a Master Vampire who is way out of her league. Since she is unable to kill him, Cat decides that she wants to learn how to be a better fighter and is trained by Bones instead. The sexual tension is hot, and the two end up together despite her prejudices. However, Cat is tracked down by Don Williams – who we find out later is her Uncle – and is forced to leave Bones and join the Paranormal Division of homeland security. She runs her own team and hunts down vampires using the knowledge that she gained from Bones.

Bones and Cat meet again, as he was relentlessly tracking her down for years, and the two end up back together and eventually marry. Cat gains popularity in the supernatural world due to her reputation of killing vampires for the Paranormal Division, and both the ghoul and vampire races see her half-vampire state as a threat to them. To save her life, Bones changes Cat into a vampire – and as a vampire she is unique in that she needs to drink vampire blood to survive, and she can temporarily replicate the special skills of the vampire or ghoul that she drinks blood from.

In the later part of the series it is discovered that while she was an agent of the Paranormal Division she was unknowingly used in genetic experimentation and actually has a biological daughter that is part human, vampire and ghoul.

Main male lead, and Master Vampire, Bones aka Crispin Russell, is Cat’s husband. Bones is over 200 years old in the start of the series and is a bounty hunter looking for a specific vampire when he runs across Cat and her vampire stakeout. He is interested in Cat from the beginning, especially due to her half-blood status and is also physically attracted to her. Originally from England, Bones was born and raised in a whorehouse and became a male escort later in life. After he was caught stealing he was sentenced to South Wales, at which time he and Spade were unwillingly changed into vampires by Ian – another friend who was sentenced with them.

After Cat leaves him and he finds her again, Bones works with her and helps out the Paranormal Division in order to keep an eye on her and keep her safe. At one point Ian becomes intrigued by Cat because of her blood status, and Bones is willing to throw away his loyalty to his friend and sire to keep her safe. He teams up with Mencheres, his grand-sire, and leaves Ian’s line and marries Cat so Ian has no claim on her whatsoever. Because of his newfound connection with Mencheres, Bones gains the ability to read the minds of humans and half-humans, and also telekinesis.

Midway through the series it is discovered that when she was younger Cat was tricked/forced into marriage with a cruel vampire named Gregor, and he later comes to restake his claim on her. Bones duels and kills him after some events, and the two of them resolidify their marriage.

When Katie, Cat’s daughter, comes into the picture as a 7 year old child who has been trained from birth to fight supernatural entities, Bones takes care of Katie as a father-figure and he and Cat go into hiding in Europe in order to protect Katie from the vampires and ghouls who are determined that Katie should be killed due to her mixed-race blood.
